Robinson, Diamant & Wolkowitz has specialized in the areas of insolvency, bankruptcy, business reorganization and creditors rights since its inception in 1962. Over the years, the Firm and its attorneys have represented debtors, secured and unsecured creditors, creditors committees, equity committees, investors, asset acquirers, trustees in bankruptcy and other interested parties in all facets of bankruptcy and reorganization cases. The Firm continues to maintain a significant litigation practice in both insolvency related and general civil litigation and represents various businesses in connection with their legal needs. Since its inception, members of the Firm have also served as bankruptcy trustees in reorganization and liquidation cases and as expert witnesses and consultants.
The Firm has been and continues to be active in national, state and local professional organizations and its members frequently lecture on insolvency and debtor-creditor related issues. Over the years, Firm members have acted as chair or vice-chairpersons for such prestigious bar committees as the American Bar Association; Business Bankruptcy Sub-Committee on Jurisdiction, Venue, Courts, Administration and the United States Trustee; the Financial Lawyers Conference; Executive Committee of the Los Angeles County Bar Association Section on Bankruptcy and Secured Transactions; the Los Angeles Bankruptcy Forum; Beverly Hills Bar Association Bankruptcy Committee and International Women's Insolvency and Reorganization Confederation. Firm members have served as adjunct professors at Los Angeles law schools and several members have written articles which have been published in various legal journals and spoken at numerous conferences on insolvency and related matters.
The Firm proudly boasts of its record of achieving successful reorganization of business capable of thereafter sustaining themselves. Included in its many successes are: Qintex Entertainment, Qintex Productions and Hal Roach Studios, three of the then-largest entertainment cases ever filed, wherein Firm members created the mechanism for the successful sale of one of the nations most comprehensive film libraries. A small sampling of other reorganizations completed includes: The Boston Stores (retail chain); Continental Forge (a significant aerospace parts manufacturer); Mr. Gasket, (large after market auto parts manufacturer);Diversified Capital Corporation (real estate); Waterfront Hilton Huntington Beach (hospitality); and Carolco Pictures, Inc. (successful out of court debt restructure).
The Firm and its attorneys also have achieved great success in its representation of creditors committees in a variety of areas. A sampling of these includes House of Fabrics, which had over 600 stores and was, at the time, the largest retail chain to file for reorganization. In House of Fabrics, the Firm negotiated a successful reorganization plan which resulted in a recovery for creditors of over 40%. The Firm and its members also have represented committees in cases as diverse as Guardian Real Estate Fund (real estate and mortgage holding companies); St. Johnsbury (trucking); Alert Holdings (alarm security company); and Louise's Trattoria (restaurant chain). The firm currently represents official committees in the Condor Systems (defense contractor); Numero Uno Pizza (restaurant franchise holding company) and Halaco Engineering (metal processing) cases. Additionally, Firm attorneys have represented official and unofficial equity committees in cases such as Caldor Corporation; Morrison-Knudsen; and Drexel Burnham Lambert, among others.
Institutional and governmental representation over the years has included Chicago Title Co., Mass Mutual, City of Miami, City of Culver City (where a Firm member has served as mayor and a member of the City Council), Port Authority of New York and New Jersey, foreign and domestic banks. The Firm has also successfully represented landlords in numerous Chapter 11 cases throughout the United States, recently including one of the major landlords in the Hawaii Liberty House Chapter 11 case.
The Firm also maintains a significant transactional practice advising clients involving real estate transactions, secured financing, leasing, among other issues.
The Firm does not shy away from taking on difficult or controversial issues. When appropriate, the Firm and its attorneys, on behalf of debtors, committee and trustees, have commenced litigation against some of the nation's largest and most well-known entities, on issues as diverse as equitable subordination, fraudulent conveyances, lender liability, breach of fiduciary duties, recharacterization of debt as equity, among others. While the Firm is proud of its role in confirming scores of reorganization plans, we also have successfully opposed plan confirmation, when in the best interests of our clients.
Members of the Firm frequently lecture on bankruptcy and insolvency related issues, as leaders of and participants in professional organizations and as guests of business organizations, the Practice Law Institute and other entities.
